About the Exam

What is the OET?

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a specialised English language exam developed by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment — designed exclusively for healthcare professionals. Unlike IELTS or PTE, every task in the OET is set in a real clinical context: patient consultations, case notes, referral letters and medical discussions.

Accepted in 40+ countries by major regulatory bodies including AHPRA (Australia), NMC and GMC (UK), NZNC (New Zealand) and HCPC — and taken by over 50,000 healthcare workers every year, OET is the gold standard for demonstrating clinical communication ability.

  • Available for 12 healthcare professions — each with tailored content
  • Graded A–E per sub-test; Grade B (350+) required by most regulators
  • Paper, computer and OET@Home formats available
  • Test held up to 11 times/month — flexible scheduling for shift workers
  • No limit on number of attempts — retake individual sub-tests as needed

Score Requirements

What OET Grade Do You Need for Registration?

Most major healthcare regulators require Grade B (350+) in all four sub-tests. There is NO compensation — a Grade A in three sub-tests cannot offset a Grade C in one. Dr Ahmed coaches to the Grade B standard across all four.

United Kingdom

NMC — Nursing & Midwifery

Grade B in L, R, SGrade C+ in W

NMC accepts Grade C+ (300+) in Writing provided all other three sub-tests reach Grade B (350+). This is the only major UK body that allows one C+. GMC and GPhC require Grade B in all four sub-tests without exception.

Australia

AHPRA — All Regulated Healthcare Professions

Grade B all 4350+ each sub-test

AHPRA requires Grade B (350+) in every sub-test for nurses, doctors, dentists, pharmacists and all registered health practitioners. As of August 2025, AHPRA now expresses OET scores numerically.

United Kingdom

GMC — Doctors · GPhC — Pharmacists

Grade B all 4Single sitting

GMC requires Grade B (350+) in all four sub-tests in a single sitting. GPhC and GDC have the same requirement. There is no combining scores from different sittings for these bodies.

New Zealand · UAE · Ireland

NZNC · DHA · NMBI & Other Regulators

Grade B all 440+ countries

New Zealand Nursing Council, UAE's DHA and HAAD, Ireland's NMBI and most other global healthcare regulators accept OET and require Grade B in all four sub-tests.
